Pathologist
The pathologist is a physician who specializes in the study of diseases of all organs, systems and apparatuses of the body. They research the causes, the course of evolution and the prognosis of diseases. Diagnosis is based on microscopic, macroscopic and molecular examinations of biopsy specimens or tissue samples taken during surgery or autopsies.
Their role is essential to the care offered by other specialties, both medical and surgical, as they provide a foundation for clinical decisions for patients of all ages. Because of their diversified knowledge, they are often consulted, sometimes even in an emergency during surgery, to guide the procedure to be followed. For example, in the case of a malignant tumor, they also determine its extent and severity, and treatments are given accordingly.
The pathologist also performs autopsies, which make it possible to discover the cause of death, the possibility of hereditary disease or even the effectiveness of certain medical or surgical treatments. Although this practice does not generally constitute the bulk of their daily work, it is nonetheless important.
