Specialist in preventive medicine
The preventive medicine specialist ensures that Quebecers stay healthy. They work to prevent health problems at their roots, in other words, they fight the underlying causes of disease and trauma. They do not analyze problems only on an individual basis. The specialist looks at what threatens the health of groups of people, such as toddlers, teenagers, workers, athletes or the most disadvantaged for example.
The specialist in preventive medicine works in public health and combats, for example, smoking, obesity, air quality that can make people sick, the spread of infectious diseases, the increase in developmental disorders in young children, concussions, etc.
They may also specialize in occupational medicine where they manage the clinical and administrative aspects of the health needs of individuals and groups in relation to their work environment, including the recognition, evaluation, control, management and rehabilitation of occupational diseases and injuries as well as other conditions affecting the ability to work.
