Orthopedist
The orthopedist provides medical and surgical care to treat diseases of bones, joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons and nerves. Orthopedic surgeons treat fractures, dislocations, ligament injuries (sprains), herniated discs, bone tumours and other conditions.
He also treats congenital malformations (clubfoot, congenital dislocation of the hip), growth anomalies (scoliosis, kyphosis, lordosis), after-effects of infectious or inflammatory diseases (poliomyelitis, rheumatoid arthritis).
The orthopedist, or orthopedic surgeon, is called upon to perform several different surgical procedures, either to repair fractures (road accidents, sports injuries, etc.), or to replace painful arthritic joints with artificial joints, or to correct deformities, whether they are newborn or acquired following cerebral palsy or trauma.
